The Business Services Division is committed to working in close partnership with entrepreneurs who want to start, expand, or close a business in the state, as well as with out-of-state businesses seeking to open offices within Montana.


Specifically, the division is responsible for registering businesses and maintaining private-sector documents directly related to business. These include such documents as corporate charters, applications for assumed business names, and registration of trademarks.

Montana Small Business Development Center

Do you need help starting a business or assistance in helping your business grow to become more profitable? The Montana Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) focus on the creation, retention and expansion of small businesses. Each year, theMontana SBDC network counsels more than 1,500 entrepreneurs and existing business owners through direct assistance and referral. The SBDC Network provides:

-one-on-one business counseling and assistance with business plan development, financial management, market feasibility, and international trade at no cost to you

-low-cost training in topics include business start-up, marketing, taxes, business plans and cash flow analysis SBDC offices offer customized local assistance to meet small business needs in their regional service areas. The SBDCs are a key access point to a broad network of public and private resources at the community level.


Since 1999, the network has assisted over 7,000 businesses with:

-new ventures, growth and expansion

-securing $117.6 million in financing

-creating or retaining over 4,600 jobs
